Finding Joy in Ordinary Days
Share
There is a phrase we often say without thinking.
"I can't wait until..."
I can't wait until the weekend.
I can't wait until vacation.
I can't wait until the kids are older.
I can't wait until life slows down.
I can't wait until...
Before we realize it, we've placed joy somewhere in the future.
We convince ourselves that happiness will arrive when circumstances change, when the schedule is lighter, when the house is finished, or when everything finally feels just right.
But life has a gentle way of reminding us that some of our greatest blessings aren't waiting for us tomorrow.
They're already here.
They simply ask us to notice them.
I was thinking recently about how many ordinary moments become the memories we treasure most.
Not the expensive vacations.
Not the perfectly planned celebrations.
But the quiet Tuesday evenings.
The smell of something baking in the oven.
Fresh flowers sitting on the kitchen table.
Music drifting softly through the house while dinner is prepared.
Watching the sun disappear behind the trees from the porch.
A familiar fragrance that instantly reminds us of someone we love.
Those moments rarely seem extraordinary while we're living them.
Yet years later, they're often the ones our hearts return to first.
Perhaps that's because joy doesn't always arrive with great fanfare.
Sometimes it slips quietly into the room and takes a seat beside us.
Scripture reminds us,
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." — Psalm 118:24 (NIV)
Notice what that verse doesn't say.
It doesn't tell us to rejoice only when life is easy.
Or when everything goes according to plan.
It simply invites us to receive today as a gift.
Today.
Not next week.
Not someday.
Today.
There is something deeply freeing about realizing we don't have to wait for a different season to begin enjoying the one we're already living.
Joy grows wherever gratitude is planted.
The more we begin noticing God's goodness in ordinary places, the more extraordinary those places begin to feel.
Maybe it's the way morning light stretches across the floor.
Maybe it's a quiet conversation after everyone else has gone to bed.
Maybe it's sitting outside with nothing more than a cool breeze, a familiar candle burning nearby, and nowhere else you need to be.
These moments don't ask us to perform.
They don't require perfection.
They simply invite us to be present.
At Lovely Alabaster, we believe our homes become meaningful not because they are perfectly decorated, but because they hold the stories of our everyday lives.
They remember birthday dinners.
Quiet prayers.
Family traditions.
Unexpected laughter.
Conversations around the kitchen island.
The first cup of coffee before the house wakes.
The final candle blown out before bed.
These ordinary moments quietly become the memories we carry for years.
James reminds us,
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights." — James 1:17 (NIV)
Sometimes those gifts arrive wrapped in ordinary paper.
A warm home.
A kind word.
Fresh flowers.
A peaceful evening.
The sound of rain.
The embrace of someone you love.
The opportunity to begin again tomorrow.
Perhaps joy has never been hiding from us.
Perhaps we've simply been looking too far ahead to notice it.
So today...
Pause before rushing to the next thing.
Open the windows.
Take a deep breath.
Watch the sunlight move across the room.
Call someone you've been thinking about.
Light a candle if you'd like.
Or simply sit quietly for a few moments.
You may discover that what you've been searching for has been gently waiting beside you all along.
Because the most beautiful life is often built one ordinary day at a time.
A Gentle Reflection
Before you continue with your week, take a quiet moment to consider:
- What ordinary moment brought me joy today?
- Where have I seen God's goodness this week?
- What blessing have I been overlooking?
- How can I become more present in the everyday moments of my life?
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to notice what has already been given.
